Ron Hugo: Violent Femmes

I absolutely adore this cover for the Violent Femmes’ self-titled debut album (on which can be found their most famous song, Blister in the Sun.) It invokes so many memories for me of growing up in the country. The image is by photographer Ron Hugo, and the model’s name is Billie Jo Campbell, which is such a fitting name, I think.

I’ve been waiting for this one. One of my favorite covers (and albums). Mixing the purity with the ramshackle is risqué.
Those bare feet are very Bouguereau.

Yep, I love it. I hadn’t thought of how it compared to Bouguereau but now that you mention it . . .

Grouper

Grouper – Dragging a Dead Deer Up a Hill:  Grouper is the stage name of Portland, Oregon’s Liz Harris, who performs creepily and beautifully serene ambient pop.  This cover, although bearing no relation to the album’s title, fits the overall tone of her music very well.

Vintage-Style Covers

Many album covers feature photos that are either vintage or made to look vintage, and of course, vintage photos of children are always popular.

The Human League

The Human League — Reproduction: This band’s premiere album has a symbolic cover with interesting implications. What does it mean, then? I’m not exactly sure, but I take it as a broad statement about the destructiveness of time and entropy.

Nicole 12

This is an obscure little electronic noise band that prides itself on provocation and controversy.  Much of its output seems to be a head-on confrontation with the issues of child sexual abuse and exploitation, and as such the covers do not shy away from featuring youth sexuality, which might seem counterproductive to some, but in my experience the most effective art pulls no punches.

TAS

TAS – Fornever: I really know nothing about this musician or his music; I happened upon this cover by accident a few years ago and thought it was just beautiful, with touches of Roger Dean in there.  The nude girl on the cover is adolescent, going by the size of her head in comparison to her body (although an adult was clearly used as the model.)  There’s not much to go on on the internet pertaining to TAS, other than a short bio on his MySpace page.

Ride with Jock Sturges

Although short-lived as a band, Ride was around long enough to put out a couple of phenomenal albums (Nowhere and Going Blank Again) and a couple of mediocre ones (Carnival of Light and Tarantula) before they broke up in 1996.  Three of the singles from the second album–well, technically two singles and a Japan-only compilation of both of the other singles–featured photos by Jock Sturges.  I’ve posted a small sample of Sturges’s work here before, and he’s already so well known that I see little reason to post too many of his photos, but these fit this month’s theme, so up they go.
